A Little Something For Everyone On The Island of Enchantment

Beyond the Dorado Beach Resort grounds, Puerto Rico's attractions range from the adventurous (like the underground caves of Río Camuy Cave Park) to the historic (like the 500-year old walls of the El Morro Fort). And there are plenty of options between the two extremes. Here are our favorite things to do on the Island of Enchantment:

El Morro Fort

El Morro Fort, or officially Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, stands guard at the entrance to San Juan harbor as a reminder of a by-gone era when invading countries would attempt sea attacks to take this prized city and harbor. This beautiful 6-level fort was named in honor of Spain’s King Philip II. The Fort wasn’t originally built as the huge structure that you see today. It has gone through many enlargements and modifications, from the time it was first built by Spain through the time that it was occupied by the US Army.

El Yunque National Rainforest

El Yunque National Rainforest is one of Puerto Rico’s and the Caribbean’s most precious natural resources…a thick emerald green forest covering 28,000 acres with peaks that rise up to 3,000 feet. El Yunque is the most visited attraction on the island and part of the U.S. National Forest. To really appreciate this remarkable ecosystem, we encourage you to spend a day exploring the misty lush forest by walking the trails, cooling off under the plunging waterfalls, and wading through the natural pools with crisp spring waters.

Museo de Arte Ponce

Following an extensive renovation, the Museo de Arte de Ponce reopened in 2010 featuring a bigger space and a larger art collection. Today, the museum houses more than 4,500 works from Europe, Africa and the Americas dating back to as early as the 14th century. During its brief hiatus, the museum lent 125 items from its permanent collection to 15 museums across nine countries, where they were admired by countless visitors. At home in the city of Ponce — along the island's southern coast — the collection is particularly cherished for its blend of European baroque works, Victorian paintings, and Puerto Rican folk art.

Calle de Cristo

Calle del Cristo is a cobblestone street in Old San Juan that has a wide variety of shops, from very touristy souvenir stores to factory outlet stores for high-end brands. Shops along Calle del Cristo include Coach, Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Tommy Hilfiger, Dooney & Bourke, and Polo as well as local shops including a cigar shop (Don Collins), clothing stores, shoe stores, boutiques, and plenty of tourist souvenirs such as t-shirts and Panama hats. There are also several art galleries, so you can pick up some local art as well as some hand-crafted Puerto Rican goods.

Bacardi Rum Distillery

You don't need to be a fan of rum to enjoy touring Casa Bacardi, the largest rum distillery in the world. That's because the Bacardi family has made their free tour interesting enough for any visitor to enjoy. And it's not just the two free samples of a Bacardi cocktail at the end. The tour takes you into the heart of an empire and relays a story of a family, and a spirit, that has left an unforgettable footprint in the Caribbean. The family has been conducting tours since 1962, an almost 50-year tradition of sharing Bacardi’s legacy with visitors from around the world.
