Dorado Beach Resort Leads in Proactive Mosquito Control

With the Zika virus making headlines around the world, Dorado Beach Resort has taken a proactive approach to mosquito control by strengthening their mosquito mitigation program throughout the entire 1400-acre community. The program, part of the Resorts' Standard Operating Procedures, has served to effectively manage mosquito populations and prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases such as Zika Virus, Chikungunya and Dengue Fever.

In September of 2014, when the Chikungunya virus first struck Puerto Rico, Dorado Beach Resort strengthened the program to eliminate mosquitos within the property. The program was refined by the property’s Engineering team, Grupo Agricola del Caribe (GAC) and Gasco Industrial Corp. The team consistently sprays and controls mosquito populations in manholes and ponds with Natural Logic, an organic, non-toxic product that kills the adult mosquito and their larvae, avoiding propagation. In2Care Mosquito Traps, developed in the Netherlands and currently approved and registered as a mosquito control tool in the Caribbean and South America, are also part of an overall surveillance program. These traps deploy a biological, US EPA-approved fungus that kills the mosquito several days after infection and can prevent the insect from transmitting diseases by blocking replication. David R. Tyson, General Manager and COO for Dorado Beach Resort, stated “The safety and well-being of our members, residents and staff is always a very high priority. Guests to our property can feel confident that we are putting our teams’ expertise to work and protecting the safety and welfare of everyone who experiences Dorado Beach. We have been proactive in three key areas—preparation, prevention and protection. To ensure the safety of our community, it’s extremely important to make sure we are taking the proper steps: first, reducing mosquito breeding through water management and source reduction, and second, reducing adult mosquito populations.”
